JEAN BERTRAM (published on February 06, 2010)

JEAN BERTRAM Peacefully, on January 9, 2010 at the age of 95, our beloved mom passed away at the Minnedosa Personal Care Home. Mom was born October 24, 1914 at Strathclair, MB to Angus and Elinor McKay. She was raised on the family farm with her four siblings, attending Green Bluff School and Strathclair High School. On June 8, 1940, she married Tom Bertram. For many years Tom's career with the Royal Bank took them to a number of communities in Manitoba as well as Dryden, ON. For a period during the Second World War they lived in Kingston, ON. In 1970, they retired to their new cottage at Ditch Lake and enjoyed some years travelling and spending winters in Texas. In 1979, they moved to the William Rose Apartments in Minnedosa and for the next 30 years this was Mom's home. Her summers were spent at her cottage at Ditch Lake. No longer able to live independently she became a resident of the Minnedosa Personal Care on June 28, 2009. Mom's life was dedicated to raising her family and serving on committees of organization in the communities that she called home. She was a member of the United Church and daily lived out her faith in kindness and caring for family and friends. She enjoyed playing bridge and scrabble with her many friends. She looked forward to the challenge of solving the crossword puzzles in the Saturday paper. The curling series on TV entertained her during the winter months. Her ability to knit and crotchet provided her family with many a sweater and a cherished afghan for each of her grandchildren. She dearly loved her summers at Ditch Lake watching the activities from her front window. The hummingbirds let her know when they returned looking for their feeder. She looked forward to hearing the loons' annual return to the waters of the lake. She was a gracious lady who welcomed friends and family to her home. Her qualities will be an example and a challenge for her family to uphold. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom; her parents and three sisters, Hazel, Eva and Isabel; and a brother Laurence, as well as a number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Left to cherish her memory are sons: Bob (Linda); Laurence (Chris) and daughter Eleanor Thiessen; grandchildren, Michael (Lisa) Bertram, Sharri (Stuart Roche) Bertram, Kori (Charlene) Thiessen, Stephen Bertram, Laurie Bertram and Andrea (Adam) Ladouceur; and great-grandchildren: Andrew, Logan and Hannah Bertram; Sarah and Emma Roche; as well as her sisters-in-law, Ruth Bertram and Mabel Richards and many nieces and nephews. A United Church service was held January 14, 2010 at St Alphonsus Catholic Church officiated by Rev. Lynette Miller with burial at the Minnedosa Cemetery beside her beloved husband Tom. Family gratefully declined flowers. A donation to the Minnedosa United Church Fund Building Fund in Mom's memory would be greatly appreciated.
