KATHARINA (KATHY) SCHANTZ (published on February 06, 2010)

KATHARINA (KATHY) SCHANTZ It is with heartfelt sorrow we announce the passing of a loving wife of 48 years, devoted mother, and beloved grandmother, more affectionately known as Omi . Kathy will be forever cherished by her husband Wilfried, daughters Suzanne and Kristina, sons-in-law Kip and Laird, and three grandchildren, Sierra, Austin, and Paige. Her loving memory will also remain in the hearts of her family in Germany, brother Adolf, sister-in-law Herta, Christiane, Berndt, and families. Kathy was born in Covaci, Romania in 1940 and as a young child immigrated to Germany with her mother and brother. In her late teens Kathy trained and worked as a pharmacy technician until she met the love of her life Wilfried. She immigrated to Canada at the young age of 20 where she married Wilfried. Together they started a new life here in Winnipeg and over the years were blessed with family and many lifelong friendships. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses who took care of Kathy during her illness this past year: Dr. Roy, Dr. Lipschitz and Dr. Hardy from Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Daeninck, Tracy, and staff at CancerCare, St. Boniface Hospital, and her primary care nurse, Kate. We would like to extend our thanks to Drs. St. Goddard and McClure and the exceptional staff at Riverview Health Center 3rd floor East Wing who comforted Kathy and our family through the toughest days of her illness. Special thanks to Michelle Persaud, Health Care Assistant Tracy, and Nursing Student Nicole who often spent extra time with Kathy bringing with them brightness to some dark days. You can shed tears that she is gone Or you can smile because she has lived You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back Or you can open your eyes and see all she's left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see her Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she's gone Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back Or you can do what she'd want: Smile, Open your eyes, Love, And go on. A service in celebration of Kathy's life will be held at St. Bernadette's Parish, 820 Cottonwood Road, Monday, February 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Kathy may be made to Riverview Health Center Foundation, directed to the Palliative Care Unit (478-6271). GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery 1 Green Acres Lane, Springfield (204) 222-3241 Hwy #1 East inside the Perimeter at Winnipeg Condolences may be sent to:
