MARIA ELIZA BERTHA DE CLERCQ (published on February 25, 2010)



MARIA ELIZA BERTHA DE CLERCQ (nee DE MECHELEER) Maria was born in Geraardsbergen, Belgium on June 19, 1920. She passed away peacefully at Parkview Place on February 9, 2010 at the age of 89. Maria was predeceased by her husband Gaston in 1981. She leaves to mourn her sons Axell (Carol), Jean-Marie (Louisette); her grandchildren: Jens (Melissa) from Corpus Christi, Texas, Jean-Louis (Melissa), Jean-Claude (Viola) from Niverville; her great-grandchildren: Brittany and Beau from Corpus Christi, Texas and Jayden from Niverville; her step-grandchild Michael and her step-great-grandchildren Tyler and Brendan. Maria was the youngest of nine children and a seamstress by profession. In 1969 the family moved to Winnipeg and began a new life with Gaston. For a short while they had a contract with the Alberta Government to start up a parka factory in Lac La Biche. Upon their return to Winnipeg they ran a garment factory with their two sons until she retired in 1985. From that point on her time and activities revolved around the Belgian Club. Maria loved to travel, dance and tell jokes. She had a long fulfilling life surrounded by her family until she got weakened by her illness. Her neighbours and friends were always a source of companionship and support for her. The family wishes to thank her doctors, nurses and staff at the various hospitals she was admitted as well as to the staff of homecare providers and lastly to the staff of Parkview Place. A celebration of Maria's life will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Cathedral de Saint-Boniface, 190 ave. de la Cathedrale with Father Damphousse officiating.
