STEPHEN JAMES PERKINS March 14, 1926 March 2, 2010 Suddenly on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 Steve passed away at the Victoria General Hospital at the age of 83 years. Remaining to forever cherish Steve's memory are his wife Viola of 61 years of marriage; sons, Steve/Hal (Brenda), Craig (Terry); daughter Georgina Hunt (David); grandchildren, Jonathan (Shireen), Melanie Reimer (Kent), Ryan (Alexandra), Olivia (Kevin Guidi), Kristina and Kyle; great-granddaughter Cordelia and sister Arleigh Perkins. He will also be missed by all members of his extended family. Steve met Viola while they were entertaining the troops. He joined the navy and served his country during the Second World War. A couple of years after his return, Viola and Steve were married in 1948. He started his working career with the Bank of Montreal, then went into sales and retired after 17 years with the Motor Vehicles branch of the Department of Highways. In their retirement, Viola and Steve loved to travel and spend time with the family that is so important to them. In his younger years Steve spent many years as a Sea Cadet in Winnipeg. Transferred to Selkirk with his work, he started the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps, Daerwood and served as the Commanding Officer until he was transferred again. Back in Winnipeg, Steve became Commanding Officer of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps, John Travers Cornwell V.C. Steve spent many years as a member of the Masons and the Oriental Band of the Khartum Temple. He enjoyed taking part in all the parades that the band participated in. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 53 years. He had served as a District Zone Commander during this time. Steve loved his sports, both as a player and a fan which brought out many varied comments. He especially loved golf, spending many happy and frustrating hours on the golf course with family and friends. A reception to celebrate Steve's life will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Fort Garry Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, 1125 Pembina Highway. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
