FLORENCE HELEN COUTU (published on March 13, 2010)

FLORENCE HELEN COUTU (nee ROBINSON) 1921 - 2010 Born October 17, 1921 passed away March 9, 2010. Mom is survived by her husband Herve of 70 years; children, Doris (Jules), Rose (Ken), Albert (Patsy), Victor (Karen), Emile (Marion), Roland (Marilyn), Linda (Dave), Corine (Claude), Cyril (Debbie), Leonard (Anita), Douglas (Wendy), Neil, Larry (Wendy). Mom is also survived by her loving sister Maude McKay. Florence (Mom) was predeceased by her brother George Robinson, son Omer, daughter-in-law Jessie, son-in-law Lloyd Sloane, grandsons, Walter and Trevor Coutu, Darcy Coutu, Marcus Coutu, great-grandson Bradley Monroe and great-granddaughter Ryan Piston. Florence was born in Oak Point and raised in St. Laurent, MB where she met her husband Herve. They were happily married for 70 years and raised their family of 14, 10 boys and four girls. Mom began her working years at the Lakeview Hotel in St. Laurent as a cook and in the late 1960s they moved to Winnipeg where she was employed as a cook at the Maryland Hotel for many years. In 1975 they decided to move to Calgary where Mom worked at the Westgate Hotel again as a cook for 19 years. She retired in 1986 at the age of 64 because she needed to have foot surgery. For many years after that we often heard Mom say boy if not for my damn feet I would still be working. After her retirement Mom loved spending time with her family. She always enjoyed when they all came together at her house especially on Sundays where she would cook a great big dinner for everyone and afterwards we would all settle down for a good game of poker. Mom enjoyed cooking, knitting and crafts, bingo and especially enjoyed her outings to the casino. Her greatest pleasure however was having her children, her 41 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren around her. Her face always lit up whenever any of them walked in the door. In 1999 Mom and Dad moved back to St. Laurent where they lived for a year and in 2000 decided to move to Winnipeg so they could be closer to doctors and hospitals because of their health. In 2009 they decided to come back home and moved into the Seniors complex where she enjoyed the company of her many friends and especially her card playing buddies. Mom was a warm and loving person and she will be dearly missed by everyone who ever knew her. Prayer service will be held on Sunday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall. Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 15 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Laurent Roman Catholic Church with a viewing held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Rev. Father Rene Katcha Digba and Rev. Father Dominque Kerbrat will officiate. The service will conclude at the church with cremation to follow. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.
