FRANCISKA TITTENBERGER (published on March 23, 2010)

FRANCISKA TITTENBERGER March 9, 1922 - March 18, 2010 Peacefully, after a long illness, Frances passed away at Luther Home in Winnipeg. She is survived by Peter, her loving and devoted husband of 61 years; her children Renata and husband Larry; Peter and wife Daria. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren K.C., Mark, Suzy and Andrika, Petra and husband Matt and her new great-granddaughter Lia. She is also survived by her sister, Borbella and extended family in Hungary. Franciska was born in the village of Pilisszentivan, Hungary. She began her life of hard work at a very young age serving as a domestic in nearby Budapest. In her late teens, she was displaced by war. She eventually found her way to Belgium where she reunited with and married Peter, her childhood sweetheart. From there the young family immigrated to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg in December, 1951. Through the support of friends, the local Hungarian community and the quiet heroism of day to day life, Frances and Peter built a new home in Canada settling in Garden City in 1959. No work was too hard for her strong will and strong back. Their cottage in Hnausa became a summer haven where Frances could tend her large garden, bask in the hot sun and wait for Peter to come home with fish from the dock. She was known for her fabulous baking, her precise knitting, sewing and crocheting. Her love for her family was embodied in the things she could make and do for them. These are the talents and memories of our mother and grandmother that we will carry with us. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of the Luther Home in Winnipeg where Frances spent the last six and one half years. Cremation has taken place. A private family remembrance will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society
