MARIA-PILAR (PILI) LAWLESS (published on March 24, 2010)

MARIA-PILAR (PILI) LAWLESS (nee Ruiz-Campuzano) January 12, 1930 - March 21, 2010 Suddenly, at her home in Calgary. Maria-Pilar was born and raised in Madrid, and was her whole life a passionate Castellana. She was the fifth of six daughters born to her parents, who lived near the Retiro park and the Prado museum. They weathered the Spanish Civil War in Madrid and Valencia, an event which despite her age at the time she would always recall vividly. In her youth she worked in the shop of her parents and studied English. She moved to London in 1954, a city she came to love, and in 1957 immigrated to Canada. Settling in Vancouver she met her future husband, David Joseph Lawless, whom she married in 1958. Their first son was born there. With her husband and son she returned to London, where her second and third sons were born. In 1963 they came back to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, where two more sons and a daughter were born. Her family became the focus of her life. In following years she returned often to Spain, eventually buying a summer home in Valencia. She moved again with her husband to Antigonish, Nova Scotia in 1990 and ultimately to Calgary in 1996, where they later retired. She was a voracious reader in both English and Spanish of Western European history, literature and classical theatre. In her final years she struggled with her health, although she continued travelling to see her extended family who had by then spread across two continents. She is survived by her loving husband David and children David Jr. (Lynn) in Ottawa, John (Alice) in Vancouver, Andrew (Freda) in Raleigh, NC, Denise Campuzano (Keith Wheaton) in Hamilton, and Jose-Ignacio and Daniel in Calgary; along with seven grandchildren: David III, Katelynn, Andrea, Claudia-Denise, Sabina, James and Aliyah; as well as one great-grandchild Violet. Also her sisters Emilia, Maria-Teresa, and Balbina of Madrid, and Avelina of Valencia. She was predeceased by her parents Emilio and Maria in Madrid and sister Mari in Vancouver.
