MINNIE FRIESEN (published on April 10, 2010)

MINNIE FRIESEN 1918 - 2010 After a short but courageous bout with cancer, mom passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospice on Sunday, April 4, 2010. Minnie was predeceased by her husband George (2008), her sister Mary Morris, and brother Maurice Williams. Left to celebrate her life are many friends and family including her sons Gary (Mari) Parr and their children, Zoe, Dustin, Kali, Charity, and David (Barbara) Friesen and their boys Matt and Sean. Born and raised in Saskatoon, SK, Minnie remained a prairie girl and moved to Manitoba in the 1940s, and lived in Winnipeg ever since. Mom was devoted to many years of service with the Princess Elizabeth Hospital Guild through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. She loved golf and played right up until last summer at St. Charles Country Club, where she and George were members for well over 45 years. Minnie was also a long time member of the Inner Wheel Club, Rotary International, where she served and made many friends. Mom (and dad) enjoyed many of Winnipeg's finest cultural offerings including the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Theater Centre, the Ballet and Opera. Mom loved cottage country. She and George built a summer cottage at Bird Lake in Nopiming Provincial Park in the 1960s. Mom, dad and our family spent many a summer weekend at the lake and it was a place of comfort and joy for mom. Mom also enjoyed going to Englewood, Florida to spend winters in the warm sunshine. After 50 years of living on Harris Boulevard in Woodhaven, St. James, mom moved into Westhaven. The staff and residents of the Westhaven are truly wonderful people. Mom loved you all and as a family we genuinely thank you for your love and support while mom lived there, and when she moved to the Grace Hospice. Another name for the Grace Hospice is Dignity. The staff of the Grace Hospice is so professional. You want your loved ones to be with them at the end of their journey. They are dedicated, committed to care and made the end of Minnie's journey peaceful. Thank you, you're really amazing people. Per mom's wishes, no formal service is planned. Gary and I, and our family, wish to thank her many friends for their personal support, cards and flowers. All these things comforted mom greatly over the last month. In lieu of flowers, we encourage support of the Grace Hospice, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 3M7, CancerCare Manitoba, ON 1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, or the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 0R3.
