GRACE IVEY (published on April 17, 2010)

GRACE IVEY It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing on April 13, 2010 of Grace Ivey, nee Grace Cruikshank in Winnipeg. She was pre-deceased by her husband Mel, sisters Ruby Giguere and Violet Gooding. She is survived by sisters Joan Thompson of California, Bess Emeno, and her twin sister Jennifer Woolston, as well as her three children, Michael, Jennifer (Paul) and Alison (Gary). Grace was born in Winnipeg in 1921 and grew up during the Great Depression, an event, which helped to shape the lives of many of her generation. She spent the main part of her career years from 1972 - 1985 with the Canadian Hostelling Association, beginning with a small office at home and through tireless effort, culminating in Winnipeg's first permanent youth hostel on Maryland, named Ivey House in her honour after her retirement. She was keenly interested and involved in social issues, especially in the area of women's rights. She served on the Manitoba Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the board of Family Planning (Planned Parenthood) and the Coalition for Reproductive Choice. She achieved several honours but felt most proud of the many friendships that grew out of her activities in the social justice movement. She will be fondly remembered for her warmth, hospitality, humour and dignity. We are grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff at Riverview Hospital, Dr. Bartlett and to her friends and colleagues for their support. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 19 1:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Winnipeg Airport West, 2520 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties, Elizabeth Fry Society or any group for social justice.
