ALICE EMILY HANNA September 6, 1928 - April 15, 2010 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher. Isaiah 50.4 Alice, beloved wife of the late John (Jack) Hanna, passed away at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. She was 81 years of age. Alice was the first child and only daughter of James and Vera Hogg. She was born in Winnipeg, where she lived most of her life. Jack, her husband of 57 years, died in November of 2009, also at the age of 81. She is survived by her daughter Jane, son Ian, son-in-law Scott and daughter-in-law Anita as well as five grandchildren: Graham Hanna, Jeffrey Mayo, Eric Hanna, Caitlin Mayo and Sarah Hanna. She is also survived by her three brothers: Roderick Hogg (Dr. Sandra Fotos), Ross Hogg (Joanne Van de Maat) and Dr. James Hogg (Dr. Wan-Cheng Tan). Alice attended Manitoba Teachers' College and began her career in one-room schools in rural Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. When her children were old enough to attend school, Alice continued her teaching career with the Seven Oaks School Division from 1964 to 1988. During this period, she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Winnipeg. From 1988 to 1991, she was employed as a faculty advisor and seminar leader at the Faculty of Education, University of Manitoba. Alice earned a Masters of Education degree from the University of Manitoba in 1994. Alice said her many years teaching Grade One were the most satisfying of her career. She always wore red on the first day of the year, because it made the kids happy . She was also fond of books and travel. Alice enjoyed a loving marriage and was very proud of her children and grandchildren. Her family would like to thank Leona Chalmers for her loving care during an earlier illness, Adina and the staff at Bethania, the Home Care workers as well as Sally Bader, a constant and faithful companion of Jack and Alice during their later years. Thanks to all of the staff at Health Sciences on D5 and H4 for all the care and compassion they showed towards Alice. Jane would also like to say a special thanks to her hospital colleagues for all of their support during this difficult time. Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111
