DR. JAMES RODWAY KIRKPATRICK M.D., FRCSC, FACS, ChM, FRCSC. On April 15, 2010 at Misericordia Place, Dr. James Rodway Kirkpatrick passed away at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Genevieve Kirkpatrick, children; Dr. Bridget Ferguson (Neil), Michael Kirkpatrick (Liz) and Elizabeth Downey (Rory), grandchildren; Kathleen, Emma and Felicity, sister Hiliary Lane (Robin) and many nieces and nephews of the UK; stepchildren Christopher Thompson (Debbie) and Steven Thompson, step-grandchildren, Justin, Bailey and Joshua of Winnipeg. Jim will also be missed by his loyal companion Oliver a miniature schnauzer. Jim was predeceased by his parents Drs. Henry and Nora Kirkpatrick and twin brother John Lister Kirkpatrick CA, CBE. Jim had a long and distinguished career training in surgery in Edinburgh and Newcastle-on-Tyne. He served in the Royal Naval Medical Service as a Surgeon and retired with rank of Surgeon Commander. He came to Canada in 1976 as Professor of Surgery at the University of Manitoba. Head of the Department of Surgery at St. Boniface Hospital until 1986 and was Head of General Surgery at St. Boniface General Hospital from 1986 until 1998. Jim was one of the founders of Laparoscopic General Surgery in Manitoba. Jim established the St. Boniface Surgical Associates in 1982, a team of surgical specialists from multiple disciplines. He instructed and mentored literally hundreds of surgical trainees. After his retirement from his position as Head of General Surgery he maintained his University appointment and consultancy position with St. Boniface General Hospital and took on a consulting position with Thompson General Hospital performing a wide range of general surgical procedures and at the Workers Compensation Board. Other professional appointments have included President of the Western Division of the Canadian Association of Clinical Surgeons, President of the Manitoba Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, and President of the Medical Staff of St. Boniface General Hospital. A service of remembrance will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The family would like to thank all staff of C5 Misericordia Hospital and MP1 of Misericordia Place for the excellent care given to Jim and his family.
