VICCIE CASSIDY (published on April 17, 2010)

VICCIE CASSIDY (nee PINCOX) On Sunday, April 11, 2010, Mrs. Viccie Cassidy of Portage la Prairie died peacefully at the age of 90 years. Viccie, the youngest of seven children, was born in Winnipeg, MB on July 2, 1919. She grew up in Winnipeg and as a young person, she attended various elementary schools and Daniel MacIntyre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg, where she participated in many school activities, particularly the Gilbert and Sullivan production, The Gondoliers . Viccie was also active in sports and was room representative for the school yearbook. She graduated in 1936. Viccie was also a member of Maryland United Church and Knox United Church in Winnipeg, and participated in the church choir, Mission Band, and C.G.I.T. Music was one of her special interests, and with tutoring from Ethel Kinley and Berythe Birse, she sang in many ensembles and choirs. She met George Cassidy while employed at Northern Electric, and they were married on September 7, 1944. Together they raised three children: David (living in Nelson, BC), Nancy (deceased), and Jane (living in Edmonton, AB). Viccie was a member of Sweet and Low Singers, which was later known as Carillon Singers. Along with her husband George, she was a longtime, active member of Prairie Players and the Portage Duplicate Bridge Club and they enjoyed wintering in Arizona and Florida. Viccie volunteered at the Portage Library, participated in charity canvass drives, and enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and sewing. Viccie was predeceased by her husband George in 1994, her daughter Nancy in 1957, parents Teresa and Matthew Pincox and her two brothers and four sisters. Viccie is survived by her children David (Frances) and Jane, along with her grandchildren Sean (Pam) and Patrick (Kirsten), and four great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Zoe, Ava, and Cooper. In memory of Viccie, there will be a tea in the Multi-Purpose Room of Dalton Estates in Portage la Prairie for her neighbours and friends on Saturday, April 24, 2010 beginning at 1:30 p.m. If friends so desire, a donation may be made to Central Plains CancerCare Services, 318 Saskatchewan Avenue East, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Viccie by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are in care of arrangements. 857-4021
