LAURA HELEN MATTSON (published on April 24, 2010)

LAURA HELEN MATTSON (nee Zuppan) February 26, 1948 - April 20, 2010 It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and loyal friend. Laura passed away peacefully at the Concordia Hospital. Left to cherish her memory, are her husband Ivan, daughters, Shirley (Terry) Arbeau, Debbie Wentoniw, and one son Robert Ascoli, all of Winnipeg; stepson Patrick (Melanie) Mattson of Piney and stepdaughter Jodi Mattson of Selkirk, brothers, Ben Zuppan (Sharon) of Paisley, Ontario, Mike Zuppan of Toronto, Ontario, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Gabor and Helen Zuppan and one infant brother. Laura was raised on a farm in Menisino. It was there that she met her first husband and they continued to live in the area and raise their three children. In 1991 she married Ivan and helped raise his two children, who had recently lost their mother. She worked numerous jobs in her lifetime, the last of which was operating the Piney Hotel Restaurant, along with her husband Ivan. She was well known there for her one of a kind burgers . Cooking was one of Laura's greatest talents, along with an amazing green thumb. We will all miss those beautiful flowers on the deck at Badger, and the delicious weekend potlucks. Another one of Laura's talents (or as most of us called it, LUCK) was the Washer Game. No one could match her fluky ricochet shots off the ground and in the box. Each chip of wood missing from those boxes will be a wonderful reminder of those happy summer days. Her stories from the Menisino area will never be matched either; she could tell a story like no other, and she's probably got them laughing in heaven now. Laura loved life and fought hard to stay with us, but the Lord must have run out of entertainers and took her to be his newest act. Over the past few months Laura spent most of her days in Winnipeg, where she was able to be with her children and grandchildren. The strong bonds made during this time will always have a special place in each and every one of their hearts, and will never be forgotten. She was a strong woman, a fighter. Some days she was the strongest of us all, and was able to bring strength out in others they didn't even know they had. Laura was able to leave this world knowing she had all the love and support she so richly deserved. She will be deeply missed by her family, and never forgotten. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Piney Community Hall, with Pastor Louis Hermansen officiating. A private family ash interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Vita Funeral Home Vita, Manitoba
