SOEUR EVA CORMIER (published on April 27, 2010)

SOEUR EVA CORMIER Our hearts are sad as we, Les Filles de la Croix, announce the passing of our dear Sister Eva Cormier (Soeur Ernestine) at Foyer Valade on April 24, 2010. She was 98 years of age. Sister Eva, the only remaining member of her immediate family, was predeceased by her parents as well as by 11 siblings: Yvonne, Blanche, Aurore, Edouard, Théodore, Ernestine, Ernest, Henri, Anne-Marie, Antoinette and Claire. She leaves to mourn the members of her community, les Filles de la Croix, numerous nieces and nephews with whom she had an affectionate and caring relationship. Sister Eva was born July 12, 1911 in La Salle, Manitoba to Joseph Cormier and Ernestine Pelletier. She attended school in La Salle and then in St. Adolphe, where she began her religious formation in 1928. The following year she left for La Puye, France where she pronounced her first vows in 1931. Upon her return to Canada, Sister Eva spent many years in community services such as cooking, gardening, caring for boarders and as sacristan in various parishes. Sister Eva was a generous person. She loved to take part in community life and filled it with many spontaneous and witty remarks. Her cheerfulness brought many happy moments to her friends and family whom she cherished dearly. She loved to read, to do puzzles and to play cards. She treasured her independence and the years she spent with the elderly were the happiest of her life. She worked 10 years as nurses' aide and then 20 years as a volunteer at Taché Center. She loved to shop for the elderly and for the Sisters. The Shopping Nun as she was often called, would wander through Eaton's store in search of a bargain or two or simply to visit with the staff and other customers. We will remember Sister Eva for her wonderful smile, her energy, her willingness to help and her joie de vivre . Her spiritual life was marked by a faithful commitment to prayer. It shone through her affectionate and caring touch for all whom she met. The little refrain she so often repeated: Si ton coeur aime mon coeur comme mon coeur aime ton coeur, ton coeur et mon coeur ne feront bientôt qu'un seul cur. testifies to her simple and deep understanding of Jesus' commandment of love. The family and the Sisters wish to thank the staffs of the Provincial House and of Foyer Valade for the exceptional care given to Sister Eva in the last years of her life. Prayers will be held Tuesday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.; the Eucharistic celebration on Wednesday, April 28 at 1:30 p.m. Both services held in the chapel of the Sisters of the Cross, 66 Moore Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2M 2C4. Interment will follow in the St. Adolphe Cemetery.
