GLADYS SHEWCHUK June 11, 1938 - May 28, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Gladys at Riverview Hospital at the age of 71. Gladys is survived by her loving sons Randall and Russell (Serina); loving grandchildren Devon and Brendon; father Nick Prokopetz of Yorkton, SK; sister Adelia; brother-in-law Rodney of Churchbridge; sisters-in-law Ollie and Nancy Shewchuk, and many nieces and nephews. Gladys had a special bond with her niece Crystal and godchild Jagor. She was predeceased by her husband Peter on September 25, 2008, her eldest son Douglas on November 13, 1992, mother Rose Prokopetz of Calder, SK on January 2, 2004, parents-in-law Karl and Josie Shewchuk of Arnes, MB; brothers-in-laws Paul, Phil, and Tony; and sister-in-law Betty. Gladys completed her education in Calder, SK prior to moving to Winnipeg in 1956 where she was employed with the Hudson Bay Company. Following the birth of her children, Gladys began a 24-year career as a dietary aide at Fred Douglas Lodge on Burrows Avenue. Gladys was very involved with her parish, St. Mary the Protectress Cathedral dedicating her time to teach Sunday School and serve with the Women's Auxiliary. Even in retirement, Gladys kept busy driving the elderly to run errands, and making her famous perogies of which she had many dedicated customers. One of her favourite pastimes was collecting owl figures and pictures, many of which adorned her home. Family was very important to Gladys. She spent much time visiting family in Saskatchewan. One of Gladys' true pleasures in life was spending time with her cherished grandchildren Devon and Brendon. Baba spent countless hours babysitting, baking, and going for walks with the kids. Her memory will live on forever in their minds and in the wonderful memories they created. Many thanks to the staff of Riverview Hospital who always showed kindness and compassion to Gladys and her family, treating her with respect and dignity. Prayers will be said on Sunday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary the Protectress Cathedral, 820 Burrows Ave. with Very Reverend Doctor Jaroslaw officiating.
