YUEN ENG (JACK) YEE (published on May 29, 2010)
YUEN ENG (JACK) YEE It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Yuen Eng Jack Yee, a husband, father and friend. Jack passed away peacefully on May 22, 2010 at the Riverview Health Centre with his family by his side. He will be profoundly missed by his wife Siu Chu Helen Yee, their four children: Simon, Bobby, Jenny and Michael, and his grandson Taro. Jack was born in a small village in rural China and was the second eldest out of four children. It was in his early years growing up that instilled within him a strong sense of family and responsibility that remained throughout his lifetime. As a young man, Jack made his journey to Canada and worked with his grandfather in Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba at the Lions Café. His passion for food ignited when he found his true calling lay in the kitchen. It was soon afterwards that Jack wished to open a restaurant of his own. That dream was realized when he moved to Winnipeg. In 1975 he opened Pearl City Restaurant where he combined traditional Chinese cuisine with Canadian influences. Not only was Jack the owner, but he also served as the head chef. After 28 years of business, the doors closed in 2003 when Jack retired. Following his retirement, Jack enjoyed his peace and quiet by spending time with his family and pursuing his various hobbies. Family was top priority and he always had everybody's best interests in mind. Great enjoyment was attained by watching TV especially when it involved wrestling, football, or nature and with conversation surrounding economics, culture and world affairs. The kitchen continued to be his domain at home as his love for food never faded, and he thrived in finding new tastes and cooking techniques. His specialties included cabbage rolls and apple pies. We could always count on his sense of humour to bring a smile to our faces. The family would like to express their many thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital and Riverview Health Centre for their amazing care and to the wonderful staff at Thomson In the Park for all of their assistance. In honour of Jack's wishes, no service will be held. Thank you for everything you have done for us throughout the years. We love you, miss you, and are always thinking of you.
