WALTER DERHAK (published on May 29, 2010)



WALTER DERHAK Walter Derhak of Winnipeg passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010 at the Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 79 years. Walter was born at Sandy Lake, Manitoba on July 15, 1930 to John and Mary (Shindruk) Derhak. After attending school in Sandy Lake he started his working career working for the Sandy Lake Co-op driving the fuel truck. He later moved to Winnipeg and worked at many different occupations spending the last 17 years prior to retirement in 1988 as a District Supervisor for the Winnipeg Free Press. During his spare time Walter enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. Walter is survived by his wife Jean; son David of Calgary; daughter Donna Alberts of Calgary; and two grandchildren, Mitchell Alberts and Matthew Alberts of Calgary; sister-in-law Helen Derhak of Sandy Lake; and brother-in-law Leo Hurd of Winnipeg. Walter is also survived by Jean's children: John (Sherry) Antonyshen of Sandy Lake, Quinton Antonyshen (Rosalie Theret) of Winnipeg, Margaret Antonyshen of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Michael Antonyshen of Brandon, Jordan Antonyshen of Sandy Lake and Ashley Antonyshen of Brandon; as well as her brothers: Peter (Verna) McSymach of Sandy Lake, MB, Leo (Sonia) MacSymach of Brandon, MB, Rudy (Josie) MacSymach of Winnipeg; sisters, Sonia (Matt) Dutchak of Oakburn, MB and Sylvia (Murray) Matiowsky of Winnipeg and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. from St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (North) Sandy Lake with Fr. Robert Kennaugh officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9.
