GERTRUDE ANN GILLIES (published on June 07, 2010)

GERTRUDE ANN GILLIES (nee ROMPLEMAN) May 24, 1916 May 30, 2010 In the early morning of Sunday, May 30, our mother and grandmother passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre, six days after her 94th birthday. Trudi was predeceased by her beloved husband Bud on May 18, 1990 and by her only sibling John Rompleman in 1971. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Jim (Donna), John (Patti) in Los Angeles, and Bud (Ricki); grandchildren, Jeffery and Andrew, Colin and Kevin in Los Angeles, Toby and Bailey. Trudi (or Toots, as she was affectionately known to her family and friends) was born in Winnipeg and lived here all her life. As a young woman she worked at Eaton's but gave up her job when she married Bud in 1940. Bud and Trudi raised their three sons in the house they built on Henderson Highway. Once the boys were in school, she used her exceptional organizational skills to run her home, work at part time jobs at Imperial Jewellers, in the family furniture store, in real estate, as well as care for her aging father and aunt. After retirement they lived in their cottage at Husavick near Gimli and wintered in California and BC. Trudi's flair for interior decorating was always evident in her various homes and cottage. She loved to entertain and was much admired for her abilities as a hostess. Bud and Trudi had 50 happy years together supporting each other through life's ups and downs, and it was obvious that a part of her went with him when he died 20 years ago. For the past six years Trudi has been a resident at Riverview and we would like to thank all the staff there who cared for her. Although she struggled with dementia for the last 10 years, we will remember her as the vibrant energetic woman she was for most of her life. If friends so desire, a contribution in Trudi's memory to Riverview Health Centre Foundation, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4 or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. A memorial service for Trudi will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Riverview Health Centre.
