GEORGE MILES LITTLE 1919 2010 Peacefully on June 3, 2010 George Miles Little, of Portage la Prairie and formerly of Poplar Point, passed away at the age of 91 years. George will be missed by his daughter Bobbi and husband Dave Janaway of Winnipeg; son-in-law Dave Cochlan of Surrey, B.C.; sister-in-law Kay Bend of Stonewall, MB; grandsons Travis Janaway (Kristine), Lin Cochlan (Casey) and Brody Cochlan. He will also be missed by his four great grandchildren, Victoria, Kaitlynn, Hunter and Kingston; and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his wife, Olive Bend Little (1989); sister, Gladys Melcombe; daughter, Frances Mae Cochlan; and a grandson, Rodney John Janaway. In 1990 George married Betty Shields of Anchorage, Alaska, who passed away in 2004. George was born and raised on a farm near Oakville, MB and educated at Beautiful Valley School. He then joined the Canadian Army and married Olive Bend of Poplar Point, MB. in 1942. In 1947 Olive and George built and operated the Sportsmans Inn Café in Poplar Point which became a meeting place for all sports fans and young people in the community. George retired in 1984 as an employee of the Public Trustee's Office with the Province of Manitoba. Over the years George was a well known sportsman in the community through his association with many baseball and hockey teams as a player, coach and manager. His church and family and many caring friends were most important to him. He was a member of the 1957 Poplar Point Memorial Hockey Team which was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. George also spent 15 years in Mesa, Arizona where he played on three World Championship Senior Softball teams. George was an active member of St Anne's Anglican Church in Poplar Point. A celebration of life will take place at the Omega Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. George's ashes will be honoured with a private family service. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in George's memory, may be made to the St. Anne's Anglican Church, Box 30, Poplar Point, MB R0H 0Z0.
