ALFRED JOHN SCHMIDT (published on June 12, 2010)



ALFRED JOHN SCHMIDT September 3, 1930 June 10, 2010 Alfred passed away peacefully at home cared for by his family and knowing that he was going home to be with his Lord and Saviour. Alfred was born in Burstall, SK and grew up on his parent's farm, the oldest of 14 children born to John and Alvina Schmidt. He attended the Christian Training Institute in Edmonton, AB where he met Amelita Stober. They were married on June 9, 1951 and lived most of their married life in St. Vital. Alfred worked for Silverwood Dairy in a number of different positions. He was very active as a member of McDermot Avenue Baptist Church where he served in a variety of roles. During his retirement he enjoyed working as a volunteer at Meadowood Manor and Union Gospel Mission. He served as a board member at Meadowood Manor. Alfred is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Amelita, two sons: Glen (Josephine) and Greg (Marianne). He has four grandchildren, Anna Marie (Darcy), Brandy (Mike), Lisa (James) and Leigh (Leanne). He also has one great-granddaughter Austyn. Alfred is also survived by his siblings: Robert (Peggy), Eileen (Allan), Reuben, Harvey (Marion), Don (Barb), Bernice (Art), Pearl (Eric), Bev (Dwight), Jim (Kim), Yvonne (Ray), brother-in-laws Len and Sam. Alfred was predeceased by sisters Helen, Betty and Inez. He enjoyed the company of friends and family and had an infectious laugh with a sense of humour that continued on even into his last days. Alfred will be lovingly missed by all. The family extends their sincere appreciation to Dr. John Foerster who was both physician and friend. Special thanks also to Palliative Care which allowed him to spend his last days surrounded by family and friends in the comfort of his home. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at McDermot Avenue Baptist Church, 821 McDermot Ave., viewing one hour prior. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
