EVELYNE JEAN GIRARD (published on June 15, 2010)

EVELYNE JEAN GIRARD Peacefully and suddenly on June 12, 2010 Evelyne Jean Girard passed away at the age of 84 with her daughter Karen by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons: Don (Kathy) and children Susan, Laura, Jennifer and Margaret; and John (Judy) and children Paul, Ian and Robert; her daughters: Danita and children Elizabeth and Anna; and Karen (Andrew Nardella) and children Marshall and Joseph; sister Marian; and friends and former colleagues. She was predeceased by husband Don in 2005, parents Jennie and John Wilson and brother Jim Wilson. Evelyne was born in Blackie, Alberta and spent her childhood in rural Southern Alberta. Her gentle and patient way began early when she often nurtured and cared for her younger siblings and cousins. In summers, Evelyne stayed with her grandparents to help care for them as they aged. She continued to help others after she graduated with a degree in Nursing from the University of Alberta in 1949. She started her nursing career as a Public Health Nurse in Rural Alberta and British Columbia in the 1950s. It was in Trail, BC that she met and married Don in 1956 and had two sons, Don Jr. and John. With Don's career, the family moved often. Danita and Karen were born in Edmonton. In 1971, they settled in Winnipeg and Evelyne resumed her nursing career as the children grew. Evelyne was a well respected Public Health Nurse in St. James. Her interest in helping new mothers and their babies led her to a position where she helped pioneer the first Early Discharge Post-Partum Program in Manitoba. This led into another role in the Ante-Partum Program which allowed expectant mothers with high blood pressure to remain at home. After retiring in 1988, Don and Evelyne travelled world-wide and enjoyed many precious years with their 11 grandchildren. Parkinsons and Alzheimers slowed her down and her final years were spent at West Park Manor. A special thanks goes out to the staff at 2 North for the warm care given to Evelyne. Flowers gratefully declined. Please feel free to donate to Evelyne's charity of choice, The Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. A small service and reception will be held June 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
