BRYAN LAURENCE ALSOP (published on June 24, 2010)

BRYAN LAURENCE ALSOP It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bryan Laurence Alsop who died suddenly on Saturday, June 12, 2010 in Erie, Pennsylvania while visiting family with his wife Diane, of 42 years. Bryan was born November 3, 1942 in Winnipeg, Manitoba the son of the late Laurence and Madeline Alsop. Bryan was very well respected in the Insurance Business owning a general insurance agency called Ryan Agency in Winnipeg for many years - a company where his father had worked then owned and which Bryan purchased at a young age after the passing of his father. Ryan Agency eventually merged with another local firm to become Ryan Gateway Insurance and most recently to become Horizon Insurance. Bryan was very instrumental and enjoyed working in both mergers. Over the years Bryan took part in many organizations and charities such as the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba, Assurex Global, The Masons, Marymound School for Girls, The Rotary Club, The Carleton Club and Proweb Insurance Software. Bryan enjoyed travelling, but his favourite travelling was done with his family. His favourite sport to play was golf, but enjoyed watching basketball, and especially football. He was a true Bombers fan! Most of all he was a devoted husband and father. His family was always his first priority, and in the last three years he became a very proud grandfather of a beautiful granddaughter and grandson. He was a loving, thoughtful and generous man to all who knew him, always ready to lend a hand however he was able. His sense of humour and caring ways with everyone he encountered made him special to so many people. He was interested in everyone, he was big hearted and kind and had a large circle of wonderful friends. He was a true animal lover, as he rarely passed a dog on the street without giving them a quick pat. He was a loving pet owner with his wife Diane for all of their married life together. Bryan and Diane moved to Vancouver in 2003 to be close to their daughter Tricia and son Grant while still maintaining his business in Winnipeg. Bryan is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Diane and his devoted children, daughter Tricia and son Grant (Sandra). He is further survived by grandchildren Sienna and Ryan Alsop - all of Vancouver; brother-in-law John Rankin (Ferne) of Hope, BC, sister-in-law Nancy Cook, husband Lyell; mother-in-law Bernice Rankin all of Erie, Pennsylvania. Also survived by his sister Janet Douglas and husband Don of Winnipeg; and his Aunt Kay Alsop of Vancouver; as well as nieces and nephews, cousins and a great-niece and great-nephew; as well as many close friends and colleagues whom he truly loved. To our Husband and Father, You will be missed so much and will be forever in our hearts. All our love Diane, Grant and Tricia A celebration of Bryan's life will be held at the Fort Garry Hotel Grand Ballroom, 222 Broadway, Winnipeg on June 28, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined, Memorials to: The Make A Wish Foundation, www.makeawish.ca or The Heart and Stroke Foundation: donations@hsf.on.ca
