AURELIA LAST (published on June 26, 2010)

AURELIA LAST It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Aurelia Jodi Last on June 24, 2010. Our dear Rea slipped away at home quietly with her family by her side. Left behind to keep her beautiful spirit alive are her partner of 20 years Shirley Page, their son and canine companion to the end, Fysal; mother Gloria; sister Glory; brother-in-law Doug Blais and nephew doggie Uncle Bert. Rea also leaves behind numerous relatives and friends. Aurelia is also predeceased by her father Tom Born on March 11, 1953, Aurelia had a happy childhood with her family as a loving daughter and big sister, developing into an accomplished dancer as a member of the McConnell dance studio, then going on to perform at Rainbow Stage. Her abilities and brilliant personality precipitated her election to president of the student council, where she graduated valedictorian from St. Mary's Academy in 1971. Always a resourceful woman, Aurelia funded her nursing school academia through teaching tap to eager young dance students. Graduating from St. Boniface General Hospital as a registered nurse in 1975, she worked in a variety of nursing positions there and was eventually elected president of the Manitoba Nurses Union Local 5 with over 1500 members at St. Boniface General Hospital. Regrettably Rea was unable to attend her 35th Nursing Reunion in May of this year. In 1988 she took a historical position as the first female conciliation officer with the Manitoba Department of Labour in the Branch of Conciliation and Mediation. During this time, she travelled across Manitoba working in both the private and public sectors, in both urban and rural areas. She was highly respected in the labour community by unions and management, considered by many to be the very best in her profession, and in turn, had a mutual respect for all of her colleagues with an enormous dedication to her work. Upon her retirement in 2008, Aurelia started her own business with the love of her life and partner Shirley Page, naming it LastPage Labour Mediation'. Working with unions and management, she was continually successful in resolving grievances in the workplace. Aurelia's personality endeared her to all that were fortunate enough to know her. Her delicious sense of humour and desire to bring a smile and warmth to her family and friends always put her front and centre, entertaining with her quick wit and charm and of course, tap dancing her way into their hearts. Otherwise, you may have found her reading... always learning. With Aurelia's extreme generosity and love of family and friends, her true affection for animals, an astounding intelligence, a truly warped and hilarious sense of humour, her keen sense of fairness and her sincerely royal presence - how dearly we will miss you Rea. You have been a great gift to us all... The family would like to thank the W.R.H.A. Palliative Care Program for their support in allowing Rea to depart this world in the comfort of her own home surrounded by her loved ones. Special thanks to our angels and friends who also made it possible for us to keep her at home. Your compassion has meant so much to us. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society in her name. LOVE YOU, MEAN IT. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Rea's life will be held at Klassen Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson Hwy. - 338-0331 Condolences may be sent to
