JOHN SCOTT GARWOOD (published on June 26, 2010)

DR. JOHN SCOTT GARWOOD Dr. John Scott Garwood passed away peacefully at Oakview Place on Friday, June 18, 2010 at the age of 81 years old. He was born in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Yorkshire, England on February 1, 1929. John was educated at Wycliffe College in Wales before entering National Service for two years, being posted to Cairo. After this he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Durham University in Newcastle upon Tyne graduating in 1955. Until he immigrated to Canada in 1959 John spent one year in Obstetrics and the remaining three years in General Practice in Middleborough, Yorkshire, England. John practiced family medicine in the St. James area, Winnipeg, Manitoba from 1959 until his retirement in 1995. With his friend Trevor Kent from medical school they first had a small clinic in Jack Andrews Pharmacy until they could build the Westwood Clinic across the street on Portage Avenue. John delivered babies and made house calls until his very last day of practice. He was associated with the Grace General Hospital throughout his entire career in Winnipeg and served two terms as Chief of the Medical Staff. John also held the position of Medical Examiner for the Province of Manitoba for over 25 years. John's services were greatly appreciated by many thousands of his patients and he served them faithfully and fully throughout his practice years. His greatest passion in life was his family, then friends, his career and a life-long love affair with the wonderful game of Golf. John leaves behind his much-loved wife and best friend Margot, of 38 years, brother Peter and sister-in-law Anne in Ipswich, England, sons Simon and David in Jacksonville, Florida, daughter Johanna and son-in-law Benny in Gatineau, Quebec and son Jonathan in Winnipeg, nephews Sam and Billy, nieces Rosie and Jane, much loved brother-in-law Fred, his wife Chantal and their three children, Alain, Marie and Simon in Gatineau, Quebec, and his much loved cousin by marriage Pat Close and daughter Allison. He was also blessed with four grandchildren, Sabrina, Mackie, Brooke and Blake. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Grace General Hospital on Friday, July 2 at 10:00 a.m., with Major Roy Dueck of The Salvation Army performing the service. Some seating is set aside for the family and close friends; the remaining seating is on a first come, first serve basis. In lieu of flowers, John and Margot request a donation be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
