MARGERY BEATRICE PLEWES (published on July 05, 2010)

MARGERY BEATRICE PLEWES (nee DOUGLAS) Peacefully on the morning of July 1, 2010 at the Victoria Hospital, Margery Beatrice Plewes passed away at the age of 86. She was loved beyond words by her children Joan (Grant Slater), David (Gina) and Howard (Sheri). Dave was her constant companion and caregiver during her struggle with dementia and was with her until the end. Grandchildren Emily and Catherine, Laura, Daniel and Michael, and Kyla and Sarah too will dearly miss their wise and wonderful Grandma. Marge was predeceased by brother Jim in 1974 and by her dear husband Gordon in 1991; she is survived by sister-in-law Louise in BC. Her quick wit and lively sense of humour will be fondly remembered by many relatives and friends in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Sioux Narrows, and beyond. Marge was born in Winnipeg in 1924 to parents George and Beatrice Douglas (St. John's Music Store). She studied social work at St. John's College, practicing in Winnipeg, Portage La Prairie, and Ottawa. After a brief, romantic courtship, she and Gordon were married in 1950 at Gordon King Memorial United Church during the great flood. Shortly after, the happy twosome moved to Kingston, Ontario and then to Ottawa where they remained for 22 years raising a family, participating in community and church life, making many life-long friends, and entertaining visitors from around the world. In 1985, they reluctantly left many good friends in Ottawa, returning to Winnipeg, to be close to family and their cottage on Lake of the Woods. Marge loved good literature, spirited conversation and debate, and most of all, a competitive game of Scrabble. She shared a love of exploring and observing nature with Gordon during many rock hunting and camping excursions throughout Ontario. She was active in the church and was a longtime member of Rothwell, Fort Garry and Sioux Narrows United Churches. The family would like to thank her friends and family for their constancy and kindness during Mother's last year. We also extend our gratitude to Dr. Brian Sharkey and the compassionate staff of 4-North at Victoria General Hospital. A funeral service and reception will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., with Rev. Nancy A. Finlayson officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Inner City Youth Alive, 418 Aberdeen Ave, Winnipeg, MB R2W 1V7, www.icya.ca. Mum was an enthusiastic supporter of their programs. Thomson In the ParK 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com
