JUSTINA HERKERT (published on July 12, 2010)

JUSTINA HERKERT (nee HARDER) It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Justina Herkert, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, on Friday, July 9, 2010. She will be missed by all. Justina was 89 years of age and passed away with family by her side, after a lengthy stay at Victoria Hospital. Those left to mourn her passing are her husband of 69 years, Otto Herkert; her four children, Gary (Donna) Herkert, Martha (Henry) Hildebrandt of Saskatoon, Pam (Warren) Marshall, Tim (Sherry) Herkert, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her step-sister Margaret in Paraguay. She was predeceased by her parents and by 10 brothers and sisters. Justina was born in the Lowe Farm area on September 24, 1920 and grew up in a Christian home surrounded by her many siblings. She came to Winnipeg and worked for a number of years and subsequently met her husband Otto Herkert. They married in Winnipeg on June 14, 1941 and began a long life together farming in Oak Bluff. Her great joys included the love and nurturing of her children and grandchildren, gardening, and travelling in later years to Florida by motor home. Justina and Otto were fortunate to be able to reside on the family farm until 2007 when they moved to Lindenwood Terrace in Winnipeg and met many new caring friends. Her Christian faith was unwavering and she set an example for her family, and all of those in her life. She read her bible daily and was involved in many aspects of Bethel Mennonite Church. A celebration of her life will be held at Bethel Mennonite Church at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 15 with viewing prior. Interment at Chapel Lawn to follow. The family would like to thank all of the staff on the 5th Floor South unit at Victoria Hospital for their care and comfort for our mother as well as our father.
