DORA SIGURDSON (published on August 21, 2010)

DORA SIGURDSON After a long and lucky' life, Dora passed away on August 16, 2010 at her home in Betel, Gimli, at the age of 92. Halldora (Dora) Sigurdson was born on March 13, 1918, the daughter of Palina (Lina) Brynjolfsson, and Thorsteinn (Steini) Gislason. Her parents met in Gimli, then homesteaded in Steep Rock, where Dora was born and raised. Dora outlived all of her siblings: sister Gwenny, twin brothers Gisli and Halldor, brothers Gardar and Kristinn. She is survived by Gardar's wife Elsie Gislason, and Kris' wife, Pauline Minish. On August 13, 1940, Dora married Franklin Sigurdson, who built a house for them in Oak Point. With Dora's devoted partnership, Franklin farmed, fished on Lake Manitoba, and later operated a mink ranch. He was the youngest son of Sigfus and Sigurlaug (Freeman) Sigurdson, who farmed east of Lundar, Manitoba. Franklin passed away in Winnipeg in June, 1995. Dora and Franklin had four children: Wilfred, Lorna, Enid and Hugh. Wilfred (wife Debra), who lives in Victoria, is the father of three daughters: Debbie, Andrea and Jennifer (mother Elaine Sigurdson). Debbie and her husband David Bolton live in Delta, BC, and have two young daughters, Nicola and Natalie. Andrea and her husband Paul Vento, in Rhode Island, have twin sons, Joseph and Michael. Jennifer died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 29. Lorna's two daughters are Dawn and Marni (father Gordon Rothwell). Dawn and her husband Chris Dueck have a daughter Tiana. Lorna retired to Kelowna, where Marni and Michael Thorpe live, with their son Riley and daughter Ashton. Enid died of cancer in 2004. She is survived by her ex-husband Rod Murphy, their two sons in Ottawa, Brad and Patrick, and Brad's family: his wife Naomi, their son Connor, and Naomi's daughters Amanda and Brishen. Hugh has three sons, Ben and Stefan (mother Gail Cabana-Coldwell) and Garrett (mother Angie Lane). Garrett's partner is Laura Matthews. Ben MacPhee-Sigurdson and his wife Mel have a daughter Frances and a son Owen. Also mourning Amma's passing along with Hugh's wife Loretta are her three daughters, Jennifer (son Logan), Jessica (son Aiden), and Amanda. After her retirement', Dora developed a passion for researching Icelandic genealogy, beginning with her father's family. Over many years, she helped dozens of people from across Canada, the United States, and Iceland to find long lost relatives on both sides of the ocean. Dora felt she was truly fortunate to have traveled to Iceland four times: first with her husband, Franklin, then with her granddaughter Dawn and her husband Chris, again with her daughter Enid, and finally, with her son Wilf and his wife Debra. In return, Dora received many treasured visits from friends and family in Iceland. On August 13, 2010, the 70th Anniversary of Dora and Franklin's wedding, we celebrated her life and renewed family ties with a Sigurdson Family Reunion in Gimli. All of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many Gislason family relatives traveled far to be together, and said their last farewell. Dora's family is truly grateful to the wonderful staff at the Betel Personal Care Home in Gimli, who enriched the last years of her life with their dedication, caring and friendship. According to Dora's wishes, cremation has taken place, and will be followed by a private interment later. For those who wish to make a contribution in her memory, we hope you will choose the Betel Home Foundation, Box 10, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0.
