JESSIE ELEANOR JOHNSON (published on September 18, 2010)

JESSIE ELEANOR JOHNSON (nee STOUGHTON) The family is very sad to announce the sudden passing of our mom and gramma, Jessie Eleanor Johnson (nee Stoughton) on September 9, 2010 at her residence in Winnipeg. Eleanor was 83 years old and quite frail but her mind was sharp and she still had her amazing sense of humour. Eleanor is loved and remembered by her four children, Brian (Shyrl), Greg (Betty), Karen (Murray) and Kim (Mark); and her nine grandchildren, Jeff, Jason (Nataly), Kurtis (Angela), Kelly (Erik), Dana (Pete), Lindy, Jesse, Carly and Jamie. She was also blessed with five beautiful great -grandchildren. Eleanor is also survived by her sister Alice Bolter of Birtle, MB; her brother and sister-in-law, Stuart and Donna Johnson of Winnipeg and sister-in-law Shirley Sanford of Ontario, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all who held a special place in her heart. Eleanor is predeceased by her husband Morgan in 2003; her parents, Alex and Jessie Stoughton; sister Hilda; brother Claude and brother Stan. Mom was born in Birtle, MB on March 28, 1927. Her and our Dad met at a dance there and the rest, as they say, is history. They married in 1946 and spent their first 14 years on the farm in Isabella before moving to Birtle, Kenora, Morden and then Winnipeg in 1968. When retirement came they sold their house in the city and built a home in Sandy Hook, MB where they spent their summers. They spent 13 winters in Mesa, Arizona and mom couldn't wait to get there - she loved to socialize and entertain. She was an amazing hostess, an accomplished cook and she loved to have people around. When our Dad passed away in 2003, Eleanor stayed on in Sandy Hook as long as she could but had to move to a condo in Selkirk in 2005. She loved it there but her mobility was fading and she took a serious fall in October of last year. It was time for Eleanor to move one last time. She took a suite at Devonshire House on Kildonan Green Drive in Winnipeg in December of 2009, and settled into life there quite well. She played all the cards she could and spent countless hours playing bridge on her laptop. She enjoyed the people she met there; and even though she didn't cook them, she loved the meals, especially the desserts! Our Mom was a very special person, she was smart and funny, talented and determined. She touched all of us in so many different ways and she was a huge presence in our family. She was a kind, tough, loving and extremely devoted mom. She had such great energy, her spirit was very bright and she was always generous with it. She had a way of making people feel comfortable and at home. Playing bridge with the ladies, curling, golfing, sewing, knitting, turkey dinners, bbq's, Christmas, being with friends and having a house full of people.....these are all things Eleanor loved and now these same things are what we will all fondly remember about her. To her friends she was forever giving, caring and fun-loving with a little bit of mischief mixed in - she loved a party and she went to them often. Cremation has taken place and it was Eleanor's request that there be no formal service. Interment will be held in Birtle, MB next summer. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
