REGINALD HOBDAY (published on September 21, 2010)

REGINALD HOBDAY 1914 - 2010 Peacefully, in the constant companionship of his family, Reg passed away on September 17, 2010 at the age of 96 years. Predeceased by the love of his life Eileen, Reg will be forever loved and remembered by his son Barry (Sandra), daughter Valerie Blank (Greg), grandchildren Shauna Mathers (Bill), Matt Blank, Danielle Hildebrand (Ray), Brent Hobday (Stephanie), Ryan Hobday (Kelly), very close friend Irene Strachan, great-grandchildren Finnley, Liam, Bree, Toby, Julian, Wyatt, Sydney, Logan, nieces Andrea Sabel, Lynn Poeltl and Gayle Stewart, and nephew Craig Stewart. Dad was also looking forward to the birth of Shauna's next child. Reg was born and educated in Winnipeg beginning his working years in the family department store on Main Street. Interrupted by the Second World War, he returned to start his general insurance career with the Insurance Company of North America where he supervised Western Canada from the Winnipeg office. After retirement, he started a second career with Milnco Insurance where he worked well into his 80s. As a young man, he was a very talented musician playing the Vaudeville circuit with his piano partner Jack Wrighton and actually shared the stage one performance with Bob Hope. We will remember falling asleep at night to the wonderful sounds of his piano. His other passion was photography. He constructed numerous lenses and a complete darkroom where he developed his own pictures. We were blessed by the huge number and high quality of these enduring memories. His artistry was also exhibited in his sketchings. A man of many talents, carpentry was a skill that allowed him to build our Greenwood house and many of our childhood toys. Dad loved to give the family great holidays making each summer both a lake holiday and a separate road trip somewhere exciting. Each winter found him in Florida with Eileen. Later in life his passion remained his piano, organ or keyboard. Although he developed an avid interest in golf also, always a sports fan, his later years were often spent with Renee watching any sport imaginable. But his greatest love was family and for that he will be best remembered. He was a very kind and loving, gentle man. A celebration of Reg's life will be held on Thursday, September 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The family would like to thank Lil Ring for her many kindnesses to Dad over the years and also the staff of the Victoria General Hospital for their very compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society, 105 - 386 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3R6 or the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 2E8.
