ILONA (HELEN) URBAN (published on October 09, 2010)

ILONA (HELEN) URBAN (nee VIRAG) Peacefully, on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at Extendicare / Tuxedo Villa, Ilona Urban passed away at the age of 82. Ilona was born on June 21, 1928 in Hungary and came to Canada in August of 1967, settling in Winnipeg to be near her relatives. She soon started working as a seamstress at Stalls Sportswear and was with them nearly 20 years. She met her husband Steve (Istvan) and was married on November 25, 1972. They had 24 wonderful years together, some at their cottage at Winnipeg Beach. Ilona belonged to the St. Anthony of Padua Hungarian Church where she was very much involved in their luncheons, teas and the annual Folklorama. She was one of the women making the Langos. When she was not doing something for the Church she loved cooking and baking, one of her favourites was perogies which were to die for. She loved needlepoint and you could see that from her pictures which she hung throughout her home. Ilona's other passion was gardening. In the summer you could never find her inside as she was always outside weeding, watering or admiring her flowers and garden. She always had a smile on her face and she was always willing to help. Ilona's last two years were spent at Extendicare / Tuxedo Villa where she also helped with many various tasks such as gardening, cleaning the tables after meals and even helping patients to the lunch room who were worse off than she was. Left to cherish Ilona's memory are her cousins, Shirley Pothe and family, Joey Pothe and family, Bob Szucs and extended family Steve and Natasha Urban. Ilona was predeceased by her beloved husband Steve (Istvan) Urban in 1996, her parents and brothers and sister in Hungary. Funeral service will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Hungarian Church, 365 Burnell St. at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 with viewing at 9:30 a.m. Father Stan Gacek will officiate at the service and interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 520 Osborne St. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the wonderful staff at Station 3 of Extendicare / Tuxedo Villa who were able to care for her when she couldn't. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. THOMSON FUNERAL HOME 669 BROADWAY, WINNIPEG, MB R3C OX4 783-7211 Condolences may be sent to
