BARBARA MAGDALENA HEIM KEKS (published on October 16, 2010)

BARBARA MAGDALENA HEIM KEKS December 3, 1931 - October 10, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother and Grandmother at the Grace Hospice, Winnipeg. Barbara fought a tough battle against pancreatic cancer with grace, dignity and optimism. Barbara was the beloved mother of Laird (Tory), Colin, Kirby (Cathie) and Lisa. Cherished Grandmother of Christopher (Laura), Brandon (Caitlin), Alexandra, Bryden, Brendan, Lauren and Landon and Great-Grandmother to Ben. Dear sister of Tony (Sue). Barbara is survived by her nephew John Heim (Marlys), niece Jennifer Laurence (Stephen) and their families. She was predeceased by her mother Barbara in 1989, father Tony in 2002 and husband Frank in 1991. Barbara was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Anton (Tony) and Barbara Heim. It was during her early years on the farm during the Depression that Barb developed her values of thrift and hard work. Brother Tony was born in 1936 and the family moved to Winnipeg. Her father Tony was a well-known tailor and opened his own successful shop in the West End. Barb graduated from West Kildonan Collegiate in 1949. She was working as a secretary when she met her future husband Frank Keks who was articling for his Chartered Accountancy. Frank and Barbara were married on July 2, 1955. Barbara was a strong, independent and resourceful woman. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She spent many happy years at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell where her parents were amongst the original cottagers. In latter years her children relocated across the country but made the annual visit to the cottage a priority. Barbara and Opa Tony were proud of the four generations who gathered together to fish, swim and water ski. Barbara belonged to several bridge clubs were she developed lifelong friendships. She loved entertaining, dining out, trying a new recipe, fishing, gardening, travelling, Kinsmen Bingo, playing cards, and shopping for a bargain. She was an accomplished amateur artist who had several showings of her work at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. John Brebeuf Church on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Father Sam Argenziano officiant. Reception will follow in the Church Hall. Private Interment at Green Acres Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Riverview Palliative Care Unit and Grace Hospice for their compassionate care during Barbara's last weeks.
