ROBERT CLARKE (published on October 30, 2010)

ROBERT CLARKE Robert Clarke was a wonderful man. Those who knew him loved him. On Wednesday, October 27, 2010, after a valiant and courageous fight with mesothelioma (asbestos cancer), loving husband, beautiful father and the grandfather of three boys that loved him so much, Robert Clarke passed away smiling, talking and joking to the very end. Rob was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on May 24, 1938 to George and Letitia Clarke. He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Sharon (David) and grandchildren Jordan, Connor and Dane, Rob's brothers Billy (Toronto) and John (Belfast) and many nieces and nephews in Northern Ireland and Canada. In 1960, Rob married the love of his life Margaret (Hunter). Dad worked for the Belfast Water Commissioners and as part of his job, he loved travelling to the reservoirs and water ways around the beautiful Northern Irish countryside, often sneaking his wee girl Sharon out from school early to accompany him. Rob was also very proud to have served in the Ulster Territorial Army. In 1978, Robert emigrated with Margaret and Sharon to Winnipeg where he began work at CN as a pipefitter. He was also heavily involved in the CN Workplace Health and Safety Committee. Rob loved his job and especially the people who he worked with; he made lifelong friends at work. After retirement from CN, Dad still continued working and making new friends at Wal-Mart and Adessa. The boys always laughed about Grandad's gift of the gab'; he could and would talk and make immediate friends with anyone - no matter where he went. He loved his boys so much and proudly attended their rugby, football and hockey games - where he could be found in the stands cheering and talking to all around him! Rob and Margaret enjoyed travelling with friends and family on holidays, where everyone always had a great time. Rob would look forward to the next trip with Barry and Norma. In 2009, Grandad celebrated his 70th birthday by travelling to Northern Ireland with his eldest grandson, Jordan, where they visited family and good friends Lillian and Richard. Along with the historical tours, the duo managed to visit every pub in both Northern Ireland and Dublin. Dad loved the shorter and somewhat closer trips too; he spoke often and fondly of having wine:30 with Kitty and Bob and the gang in Florida, and cherished time at Snow Lake with Ella and Maurice and at the family's Hillside cottage. Thank you to all the friends and family who loved Dad. Thank you to the nurses at CancerCare and the Health Sciences Centre who laughed at his jokes and Cheryl, who brought him the Guinness' t-shirt to wear on the ward. Oh how Grandad loved his Guinness! We give a very special thanks to Dr. Srinathan and Dr. Harding for the tremendous care they provided. A celebration of Rob's life will take place Tuesday, November 2, 2010, 3:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg. If friends wish, a donation can be made to CancerCare Manitoba in memory of Robert Clarke.
