MARY DOREEN BRYANT (published on January 13, 2011)

MARY DOREEN BRYANT With regret, we announce the sudden passing of Mary Doreen Bryant on December 30, 2010, at the age of 84. Doreen leaves to mourn her three children, Sharon (Ron), Doug (Judy) and Terry; her grand-children, Ashley and Andrew; brother Jack Smith (Glenda), sisters-in-law Mary Smith (George) and Audrey Smith (Mac) as well as many caring nieces and nephews. Doreen was predeceased by her parents George and Jessie Smith of Argyle, brothers George Smith and Mac Smith, sister Margaret Burton, brother-in-law Harry Burton, sister-in-law Pat Smith, and her niece Heather Hurd, all of Winnipeg, as well as her ex-husband, Roy Bryant, of Parksville B.C. Doreen was born at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg on August 4, 1926 and lived with her family in the Argyle and Winnipeg area until she married in 1946. Her husband was an Air Force NCO and pilot and Doreen traveled with him to live in other parts of Canada and in England and France. Finally settling back in Winnipeg, she and her husband divorced in 1987. Doreen worked in sales at Sears and her many years in retail sales at Eaton's earned her the Timothy Eaton Quarter Century Club award in 1997. Soon after retiring from the paid work force, Doreen became a volunteer at the Grace Hospital. Her work in admitting, day surgery and book sales earned her a service award in 2008 and the Mayor's Volunteer Award in 2009. She loved lending a helping hand while enjoying her job and her many friends at the Grace. A very active senior, she had just completed her 18th year as a volunteer when she passed away peacefully at home. Besides spending her time doing good work, Doreen loved to travel. She had recently visited Scotland, homeland of her parents, and on previous trips had fulfilled her lifelong dream of seeing both Alaska and Hawaii, all these with her daughter, Sharon. She visited her son, Terry in Alberta many times, and had just returned from another trip to the Ottawa home of her son, Douglas, and his family when her turn came to leave us. Doreen loved shopping, reading, knitting and, in her younger days, curling, baseball and dancing. Most of all, though, Doreen loved spending time with her children, larger family and her friends. Her favourite thing to do was to find some excuse to host a party, or a dinner or a get-together, where she could enjoy their company. To honour her wishes, there will be no service. To let her go as she lived, a celebration of her life will take place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. on Saturday, January 15, 2011 between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. All who knew and loved her are welcome to drop in and share memories. A private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
