LORNE ARTHUR MASON (published on February 23, 2011)

LORNE ARTHUR MASON September 1, 1945 February 18, 2011 With great sadness, Judi, Derek and Brent announce the passing of their husband and father, Lorne Arthur Mason on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Grace Hospice. He was a kind and gentle soul who loved life and cherished family and our many friends. Besides his wife and sons, Lorne is survived by brothers Ken (Pat), Ray (Faye), Gerald; sister Bev (Craig) Stewart; Judi's sisters Donna (Gord) Irving, and Sharon (Tony) LaMonica; her brother Rob (Sherry) Whitelaw; mother-in-law Doris Whitelaw; Aunt Gladys Watt; numerous nieces; nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; and cousins. Lorne loved and was very proud of his sons and was looking forward to spending time at our cottage and traveling with his best friend, Judi before he lost his battle with cancer. His passions included baseball, curling, and golf and many lifelong friendships were made sharing his love of these sports. He so enjoyed golfing in Texas and with the Happy Hackers and his once-a-year fishing trip with buddies from Motor Coach Industries. Lorne served as President of the Victoria Curling Club where he spent many hours and was proud of his volunteer involvement in two World Curling Championships, two Briers and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame. His proudest accomplishment was building our retirement cottage at McConnell Lake in Ontario, especially enjoying happy hours at the end of long days. Thank you to our family and friends who have been so supportive, the wonderful nurses at CancerCare and the Grace Hospice who helped Lorne in his journey; you are amazing, caring people. Thank you also to Doctors A. Jowett, R. Harris, M. Rubinger and A. Cooke for the care you gave Lorne during his battle. On Thursday, February 24, 2011 Lorne's Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive, Winnipeg, MB. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Lorne can be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation, for the Grace Hospice, 300 Booth Drive MB R3J 3R5 or to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
