JOSEPH BERARD (published on February 28, 2011)

JOSEPH BERARD Peacefully, on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the DeSalaberry and District Health Centre in St. Pierre Jolys, Manitoba, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Joseph passed away at the age of 83 years. Jos is survived by his loving wife, Claire, son Yves, daughter Réjeanne (Robert) Dorge and grandson, Justin; by sisters Agathe Forest, Rita (Stan) Metleski, Simone (Paul) Turenne, Thérèse (Albert) Morin, and Germaine Bérard; and by brother Paul (Marion) Bérard. Dad will be remembered for his love of life, his sense of humour and his generous spirit. Jos loved travelling, camping and the great outdoors. The deep woods always called to him as he loved nothing more than to be in nature, cutting down trees, splitting wood and building a good fire. Jos retired from Trimac Transportation after 20 years of service. He also worked in the mines in Red Lake, Ontario; cleared bush and worked construction building roads and bridges that are still being used today. Jos worked hard, but liked to play hard too. He enjoyed his trucks, snowmobiles, and his camper trailers, but loved even more getting good use out of them. We will miss our handyman as it seemed there was nothing he wasn't able to repair and no motor he couldn't get started again. Jos was a proud, sometimes quiet man, but he didn't hesitate to speak his mind either. He often expressed his love, gratitude and opinion to those who were near and dear to him. He always enjoyed a good cup of coffee or two, chatting and reminiscing with old friends and family. When his grandson, Justin, came along, it was clear the family pecking order had changed. Justin became the apple of Jos' eye and he made sure to stop in as often as possible to visit. Pepère Jos always made sure his little Justin had a new John Deere bicycle as soon as he outgrew the old one. He loved to give Justin rides and treats and they often worked together outside doing odd jobs around the yard. Dad fought a long and courageous battle with cancer, and his love for life dimmed only by the onset and progression of dementia. We are so very thankful and blessed to have known and loved him. The pain of losing him in death has been eased somewhat by the relief and comfort in knowing that his suffering has come to an end. The family wishes to thank the staff at the DeSalaberry and District Health Centre in St. Pierre Jolys for their loving care and compassion towards Jos. The Celebration of Joseph's life will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Notre Dame de la Miséricorde Church in Ile des Chênes, Manitoba, with Father Célestin Malengu Mubaya officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements, 775-2220.
