DOROTHY CRUST (published on March 05, 2011)

DOROTHY CRUST With great sadness we announce the passing of Dorothy Crust (nee Greenstone) on February 11, 2011, at the age of 88. Dorothy will be sorely missed by her children Carole (Eli), Gail (Marshall), Louis, Lillian (Leslie), Elizabeth (Ed), and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba where, at 16, she met the love of her life, Joseph Crust; they married in 1945 while he was in the R.C.A.F. Joe died in 1985. Dorothy was well read. She had a talent for languages, being fluent in French, Yiddish and English, and able to pick up Spanish, Hebrew, Russian, and German. She was beautiful, graceful, and a talented singer and dancer, and she was also talented in the applied arts. Dorothy lived her entire life in Winnipeg and applied her many talents to raising her family and contributing to the community. Dorothy produced, directed and hosted a public television talk show in Winnipeg, and she was asked to be chairperson or keynote speaker at meetings and president of various organizations and associations. She was a member of the Jewish Historical Society, The Manitoba Historical Society, the Rady Stay Young seniors group and the Stay Young Choir. Dorothy and Joe were pioneers in the anti-smoking campaign in the 1960s and founding members of The Manitoba Cancer Society. ln 1977 she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in recognition of her community achievements. Dorothy's kindness, hospitality and dignity were memorable to all who met her, but her deepest love was for her husband and five children. She dedicated her greatest efforts toward building an ethical, loving and Jewish observant home in a time and place where that took much effort. Dorothy will be remembered by many for her dedication to family, Judaism and humanity; and will be missed by all who knew her. Memorial donations can be made to Magen David Adom, The Canadian Cancer Society, The Jewish National Fund or the charity of your choice.
