MARY SIDOF (published on September 09, 2011)

MARY SIDOF (nee GIESBRECHT) It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Mary Sidof announces her passing into God's loving hands on September 4, 2011. Mary was born June 26, 1922 in Winkler, Manitoba to Heinrich K. and Katharina Giesbrecht. Mary's childhood years were spent in Blumenfeld, Manitoba and in her middle teens left home to work for the Elias family. In 1950, Mary met Alexander Sidof and on May 27, 1951 they were married at the Bergthaler church in Winkler, Manitoba. The early years of marriage in Winnipeg were a struggle but yet very rewarding. A first home in East Kildonan on Roberta Ave., and a new bundle of joy, Albert Alexander in 1952. A couple of years later and another addition to the family, Robert Henry in 1954. At this point life in that little house on Roberta Ave. was just not enough room for the growing family and they moved to Fort Garry. Mary loved and doted on her two boys, but one more little addition was in store for this mother and along came Caroline Anne four years later in 1958. One more move was made for this family and they moved to Riverwood Ave. in 1959 where they resided for the next 30 years. At this point the house became too much for Mary and a final move to Osborne Street was made. Mary had a great love for gardening and could quite often be found tending to her vegetables. Mary's greatest love was her family, not just her children but also her father and mother and the many brothers and sisters (22 in all). As the children grew Mary had a few jobs doing different things, but the last one, working in a dress shop, is the one that Mary enjoyed the most. Mary enjoyed traveling, whether it was going on road trips with Alex and her children in the early years or bus tours with her sister Ann in her retirement years. If you were looking for Mary you could usually find her out and about with sister Ann, but she could also be found gallivanting with her childhood friend Rose Derksen. In later years, it was going for coffee and a good chat with sister Esther. Mary is survived by her children Albert (Shirley), Robert (Deanna) and Caroline Conner (Michael Archbutt), the grandchildren, Greg Sidof, Angie Sidof and Garry Lawrence. She is also survived by her brother John Giesbrecht (Marlene), and four sisters, Ann Giesbrecht, Nettie Fehr, Helen Hemmiger (Leonard), and Esther Friesen, as well as her sister-in-law Elsie Norquay and Susan Giesbrecht and many numerous nieces and nephews. Mary is predeceased by her husband Alexander Sidof, father Heinrich K. Giesbrecht, mother Katharina Giesbrecht (Rempel), as well as 17 brothers and sisters and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. A Celebration of Life (Viewing) on Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. will be held at Chapel Lawn 4000 Portage Ave. The funeral service will be held on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford St., Winnipeg, MB with Pastor Rudy Baergen officiating.
