CLARA (CLAIRE) SCHWARTZWALD (published on September 10, 2011)

CLARA (CLAIRE) SCHWARTZWALD September 5, 1925 - August 31, 2011 Peacefully, in Montreal. Claire was born in Winnipeg's North End and lived there for all but the final two years of her life. She often recalled fondly how, as a young girl living on Dufferin Street, she would walk across the Salter Street Bridge to the William Street Library and return home to settle into her favourite arm chair with a new pile of novels. She maintained a novelist's eye , and a lively and intellgent curiosity about people, throughout her life. After attending Machray School and St. John's Tech, she graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946. She married Martin Schwartzwald on September 4, 1951. After his passing in 1997, Claire continued to live in their West Kildonan home until 2009, when she moved to the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence. There, she reconnected with many friends from her younger years and made new friends, as well. When her health failed and she could no longer live autonomously, she joined her son in Montreal, where she spent the final two months of her life at the Château Westmount Personal Care Home. Claire was predeceased by her husband Martin, her brothers Jack and Hash Schwartz, her sister-in-law Tootie (Alice) Schwartz and brother-in-law Harvey Schwartz. She is survived by her son Robert (Robbie) of Montreal, her sister Lucy and brother-in-law Irv Slusky, and sisters-in-law Gertie Schwartz and Toby Schwartz. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on Sunday, September 4. Claire was laid to rest next to her husband Martin on the day of their 60th wedding anniversary. Bill Weissmann officiated and Robbie Schwartzwald delivered the eulogy. Pallbearers were: Howie Schwartz, Steven Schwartz, Alan Slusky, Mark Slusky, and Noah Slusky, and Marty Minuk. Sincere and heartfelt thanks to the staff of 4 south at the Grace Hospital and of Cornish 5 at the Misericordia Health Centre and to the wonderful teams at the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence and the Château Westmount. A very special thanks to Esther Daga and Josie Ramos, Claire's devoted companion. Memorial donations may be made in Claire's name to the Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.
