ADA SMART (published on September 10, 2011)

ADA SMART January 14, 1917 - August 31, 2011 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ada Smart (Steinbart) on August 31, 2011 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband John, and her brothers Ronald and Arnold. She is survived by her sister Sylvia (Herb); sister-in-law Dorothy; daughter Beverley (John); son Ronald (Valerie); grandchildren Dane (Michele), Nicole (Kevin), Shaun (Alanna), Sherri (Kyle), and great-grandchildren Sloane, Nixon, and Ava. Ada lived her life with determination, compassion, and good-humour. She resided in Winnipeg all her life aside from the six years she spent in Dauphin during the war. She held many jobs during her lifetime including employment with Swifts in her early years and then for the VON as a home care provider until retirement. As a young mother in the 1950s she volunteered as a Marching Mother for the March of Dimes. Upon retirement she volunteered for more than 15 years with Age and Opportunity where she became a companion for at-risk seniors well into her 80s. Ada will always be remembered for her strength and longevity. She took great pride in her independence and her ability to attend a seniors group at the Y.M.C.A. until the age of 92. Ada filled her years with laughter and fun. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking. She always had fresh goodies for when company came over and her signature icebox cookies will be missed by all who were fortunate to have tried them. She also loved to dance and never turned down a good Polka or chance to hit the dance floor. Her thriftiness, spunk, and love for cocktail hour will also be among the cherished memories and moments of laughter. A special thanks to Nicole and Sherri for the care and support they gave to their grandmother in her final week. As per Ada's request a private family gathering will be held in lieu of a funeral service.
