ALEXANDER KITCHENER MATTICK (published on September 14, 2011)

ALEXANDER KITCHENER MATTICK Al was born March 5, 1919 in Edgeley, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully on September 11, 2011 in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his first wife Maud, son James, grandson Jamie, brothers Arthur and Leonard. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen (Ken) Wilkinson, their son Brian; daughter-in-law Laureen Mattick, her daughter Lindsay (Michael) Davidson; his wife Jean, her daughter Heather (George) Powell, grandchildren Kim (Ted), Margo (Dwayne); her son John (Judy) Tozeland, grandchildren Tami (Tom), Sage and five great-grandchildren. Al was raised on the farm in Qu'Appelle, SK. He later served with the RAF for most of the war as a wireless air gunner and from late 1944 on as a fighter pilot. He and Maud lived in Winnipeg after their marriage in 1948 and he graduated as a civil engineer from the University of Manitoba in 1952. They had two children and shared their life together until her passing in 1992. His career took him to Malawi, Africa from 1973 to 1975 where he worked as a consultant to the United Nations on a water resources assessment of Lake Malawi. Al was an avid golfer and curler. He won many bonspiels on men's and mixed rinks and his name sits in the Manitoba curling hall of fame. He also enjoyed bridge, poker and bingo in his later years. His marriage to Jean brought many years of happiness, much international travel and a whole new family who grew to love him. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
