BERTHA MACDONALD (published on September 24, 2011)

BERTHA MACDONALD Our loving aunt, sister and friend passed away peacefully at Charleswood Care Centre in Winnipeg, MB on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at age 88. Bertha will be lovingly remembered by her remaining sister Lucille, sister-in-law Daisy, and many nieces and nephews who enjoyed a special relationship with Aunt Bertha . She is predeceased by parents John and Lucy Macdonald, brother Jack, and sisters Enid, Vera, and Jessie. Born in Winnipeg on February 27,1923, Bertha graduated from Gordon Bell School and later attended business college. She was later recruited by the federal government and became a dedicated employee of the Unemployment Insurance Commission for 37 years, where she pulled her weight and did not complain . Easily able to talk to anyone about a variety of topics, Bertha was always interested in family news and events. She hosted many meals with nieces and nephews and was also very generous in donating to various charities. Early memories of visiting Granny and Bertha at their homes on Kensington St., Doreen St., and 732 Garfield St. are shared by many younger family members. Bertha enjoyed travelling to visit her sister Vera and friend Hilda in Los Angeles. She was an avid gardener and loved to follow current events and sports teams, including the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. She was also an active member of Chalmers United Church and more recently McClure United. Her church family continued to be great supporters after she was hospitalized in November, 2005, and later resided at Charleswood Care Centre. Family members wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Charleswood Care Centre, who became part of Bertha's family and treated her with the dignity and kindness she deserved. As one family member put it We feel blessed that Bertha was part of our lives. We love you and will miss you very much. A funeral service will be held Friday, September 30 at 11:00 a.m. at McClure United Church, 533 Greenwood Place. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in Bertha's memory to The Children's Hospital Foundation, Be My Hero Capital Campaign .
