WALTER OSCAR RUSSELL (published on September 26, 2011)

WALTER OSCAR RUSSELL In the early morning on September 24, 2011, with his loving wife Marion at his side, Walter Russell, aged 98 years of Ashern, MB, went to be with his Lord and Saviour. Walter was born to Fredrick and Caroline Russell in Ashern, Manitoba, on August 10, 1913. He was a resident of Ashern all of his life, with the exception of three years, which he spent in Winnipeg. Walter had three great loves, his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, his family, and his farm. Aside from his career in farming, he owned and managed Russell's Red White grocery store for three years. Later on, he became a co-owner of Russell Geisler Transfer for twelve years. He retired from farming at the age of 84. Walter also dedicated much time and energy to the building and work of the Moosehorn Baptist Church and the Ashern Gospel Chapel, using his life to make a spiritual difference in his part of the world. But his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, and having his children and grandchildren close. Walter is survived by his devoted wife Marion of 51 years; his five children, Norman (Louise), Bernice (Henry), Phillip (Liz), Carolyn (Todd) and Claudia; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; sisters, Irene and Ruth (Ed) and brother Arthur. He is predeceased by his first wife Jean, his brothers Fred, Hugo and Clarence and great-granddaughter Teneyle Dyck. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the Ashern Gospel Chapel, with Pastor Bill Watson and Abe Froese officiating. A private family interment to follow in the Ashern Gospel Cemetery. The family invites you to join them for a lunch following the service at the Ashern Legion Hall. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brad Russell, Scott Cameron, Jeff Dyck, Dan Granberg, Keegan Russell and Roland Russell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Samaritan's Purse, a charity Walter supported and believed in, and can be directed to them at 20 Hopewell Way NE, Calgary, AB T3J 5H5.
