PIETRO SCERBO (published on October 04, 2011)

PIETRO SCERBO It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Pietro surrounded by his family on October 1, 2011 at the age of 91 years. He leaves to forever cherish his memory his devoted wife of 65 years, Natalina, his son Tom (Mary), daughter Lina (Tony), grandchildren Venessa (Tony), Michael (Ashleigh), Tom (Connie), Robert (Rachelle), and Dina (Peter). Great-grandchildren, Luca, Marco, Siena, Alessa, Matteo and Cali. Sisters Carolina Masi and Maria Masi and sister-in-law Angelina Caligiuri, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his mother Maria, father Tommaso, infant daughter Maria, brothers Francesco and Arcangelo, sister Carmela and great-grandchildren infant twins Ollie and Pauli. Pietro was born on November 15, 1919 in Amato, Catanzaro, Italy, where he lived until he came to Canada. His family had a flour mill where he worked until he joined the Army in 1940 to 1946 and served in Corsica, France. He then returned to Amato to marry the love of his life and best friend Natalina on August 19, 1946. He came to Canada in 1951 and worked with the CN Rail in Winnipeg and BC. With the arrival of his wife and children in 1957 they started a new life as a family in Winnipeg. After battling the cold Winnipeg winters in 1965 he decided to seek work indoors and worked as a maintenance worker at the Health Sciences Centre, until 1970 when he went to work at Sears Department Store in Garden City until a much deserved retirement in 1984. Pietro was a devoted husband, father, Nonno, brother, uncle and friend to so many. His greatest joy in life was family and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he spent numerous hours playing with. His love of gardening also served a lot of us well over the years with possibly the largest garden in the Maples. If that wasn't enough he and Natalina had a huge hand in the family garden in Gimli. We will all remember something special that he said or did for us. He was a wonderful man that touched the lives of countless people. He would smile at anyone he crossed paths with. He had the type of personality that always made you feel like you were special and really believed there was something special about all of us. He will always be remembered and never forgotten. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish Church, 510 River Avenue with Fr. Sam Argenziano the Celebrant. Viewing and condolences will begin at 10:00 am. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street. Pallbearers will be Michael Guzzi, Tony Pallone, Tom Scerbo Jr., Robert Scerbo, Alfred Cantafio and Giuliano Scarpino. Flowers are graciously declined, donations may be made in Pietro's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Holy Rosary Parish in memoriam. Many thanks go out to Mary Ashcroft, and nurses Stella, Richard, Harriett and Jay. Special thanks to Dr. Brian Sharkey for being a special part of our lives and going above and beyond. Also thank you to Dr. Barbara Biala for her many years of care and compassion as well as numerous nieces and nephews for their love and support.
