YVONNE RAFFARD (published on October 27, 2011)

YVONNE RAFFARD (nee GRANDMONT) Peacefully, with her family by her side, on October 23, 2011 at the Repos-Jolys in Saint-Pierre-Jolys. Left to cherish Yvonne's memory are daughter-in-law (Laurie), children Dolores (Gilbert) Carrière, Lorraine (Bob) Cauthers, Evelyne (Pierre) Beaudoin, Marc (Eleonora), Jeanine (Adrian) Bernard, Michel; her 28 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; sister Florence (Walt) Mikkelsen; brothers Raymond (Ethel), Laurence (Irene); sisters-in-law Mary, Darlene, Judy; special friends such as MaryLou, many cousins and relatives. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Marcel; her son, Denis; granddaughters Marie and Rachel, and great-granddaughter Emily. Also, brothers Leo, Emil (Lyd), Frank; sister Cecile; brothers-in-law Dave, Gaston, Elie (Nellie), Michel, Wilfrid (Anna) and Lucien, and sisters-in-law Elise, Sylvie (Roderick) McDonald and Alida (Harold) Curran. Born November 26, 1915, she was the eldest of eight children born to Georges Grandmont and Rosalie Lange and grew up in St. Norbert, gardening with her parents and learning the basics of what would become her life's work as a farm wife and mother. She discovered her green thumb early in life, passing it on to each of her descendants. After a brief courtship, she married Marcel in the little Stonewall Catholic Church on December 27, 1939. She went off with him to work by his side on the Raffard family farm in Mission Saint-Hubert, Saskatchewan. In 1943, when an opportunity to buy off a part of the Grandmont family farm in Argyle, Manitoba came up, they moved back to Manitoba. Faith and language were important to Yvonne and Marcel so they bought a farm in June 1948 in Otterburne West to be closer to a French Catholic community. Being an accomplished musician she very much enjoyed the winter parties with neighbours, joining in on the revelries with her piano playing, while Dad played the harmonica and accordion, both tuned in to the wonderful old-time music of the local orchestra and the beat of the square dancers feet on the livingroom floor. She found great pleasure and relaxation working in her garden and flower beds until she was 92 years old, but having learned very early in life that time is precious she filled any spare minutes of her days with crocheting, knitting, quilting - cutting squares for quilts until just recently. Family was sacred to her and she spent so many hours writing letters, cards, sending special CARE packages to those far away, whether it be her immediate family or relatives from all sides of the family. A mass celebrating her life, officiated by Father Antoine Vo Van Hoa, will take place at Saint-Viateur Catholic Church in Otterburne on Saturday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m., with prayers being said at 1:30 p.m. Donations may be made in Yvonne's memory to Repos Jolys at 354 Préfontaine Avenue, St-Pierre-Jolys, MB R0A 1V0 or the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society at 204-825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5. Many thanks to Father Antoine Vo Van Hoa, Dr. Mark Duerksen, Home Care and Annette and all the staff at the Repos Jolys for the wonderful care given over the years and in recent months.
