MELVILLE JAMES (JIM) ARIS (published on February 12, 2009)

MELVILLE JAMES (JIM) ARIS On Sunday, February 8, 2009, Jim passed away at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 84 years. Jim was born in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario, September 2, 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 and served overseas during the Second World War in France and Belgium with the 410 Squadron. He worked for the Canadian Grain Commission for 38 years; transferred to Winnipeg in 1974 and retired in 1981. Jim was an avid sports enthusiast, including football, golf and curling. Jim was Drum Major of The Pipes and Drums of Thunder Bay for over 30 years, a Trustee for the Lakehead Board of Education and a board member of Parks and Recreation. In Winnipeg Jim was a member of the Parish of St. Bede's/St. Stephen's and was a lay reader for over 40 years and member of the choir, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Winnipeg South Osborne Branch No. 252. Jim leaves to cherish his memory his wife Pat of 58 years, daughters Susan Aris (Jeff Dika) of Thunder Bay, Andrea Aris of Toronto and grandchildren Lea Bayly (Ryan) of Thunder Bay and Aidan Fine of Toronto, great grandchild Iain Bayly, sister Joyce Boyd of Kingston, brother-in-law Edwin Parliament of Toronto; step grandchildren Sheleigh, Glen and Steve Dika of Thunder Bay, special niece Marcia (Fred) Wilmot of Thunder Bay and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Isabell and Ed Aris and sister Joan Poulter. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 14, 2009 at The Church of St. Stephen St. Bede, 99 Turner at Mount Royal.
